Representatives from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, along with Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Grand River Dam Authority have completed an initial inspection of Town Branch in Tahlequah from the small bridge just upstream of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) outfall/discharge, which is not currently showing the typically clear discharge. Additionally, all treatment/microbes were dead in the sequencing batch reactor or SBR #1. SBRs #2 and #3 are currently functioning at 15 to 20 percent. Several dead fish were observed near the WWTP, and in the area downsteam towards the confluence.
Water samples have been collected and are currently being analyzed. Those results are expected to be available late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
The ODEQ is serving as the lead agency on this incident, with assistance from other agencies.

In reference to the recent information about our Wastewater Treatment Facility:
We are currently experiencing a loading issue with our SBRs. On or about July 10th, we noticed some discoloration in a few of our SBRs and the alkalinity level began to rise, killing off the bacteria in the basins. As a result, a septic odor is emitted. Jordan Hultgren at DEQ was contacted to inform DEQ of the situation. Since this event occurred, we have been re-seeding with bio-solids from our digester to the SBRs daily in an attempt to heal our basins. Once healthy levels of bacteria are reestablished in our treatment basins, this should resolve the septic odor issue.
All water is being treated and disinfected through our Wastewater Treatment Facility. We are closely monitoring this with the assistance of DEQ and GRDA Eco Systems Team.

We are having temporary river pump issues. At this time, we are pulling water from our off-stream storage facilities. While this water is tested just a rigorously as our normal methods and is completely safe for consumption, you may notice a slight difference in the taste. This is temporary and our team is working diligently to make sure we get our pumps back up and running properly.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!
